New Cell Phone

So those of you who know I had a crappy phone in the U.S., I picked up a great new cell phone in China today, a Samsung (which goes by 'AnyCall' in China). Some things I like about it:

-A mirrored face, the screen appears when you use the phone like the Evil Step-Mother in the mirror in Snow White. It's very cool!
-Connects via bluetooth for easy downloading of songs, pics etc.
-3 mp camera and camcorder
-MP3 player
-Touch screen with vibrating links
-FM Radio
-The wallpaper is animated, and changes with the time of day
-Old fashioned circle clock option for the time, the dork in me loves this

I can send picture messages again! And the phone is unlocked, I think I'll be able to use it in the U.S.

It's a tough life lesson that when you try to be more loving, forgiving and in greater harmony with those around you, you will discover that someone you have feelings for, like and care about turns out to be a person capable of doing awful, despicable, unjust things. Bye Bye Bali, Plus Daily Life

My grandma is not doing well. So, I am no longer going to Bali and Beijing over my break; instead, I'll be flying back to the U.S. to spend time with her and other family. I was looking forward to these trips, but Bali and Beijing will be there for a long while. Grandma comes first. I am sure those of you reading can understand and would do the same thing. Now, a few things to share about daily life in China: 1. Street cleaning trucks in my city play "Happy Birthday" in a high-pitched tone, over and over and over. There is also a techno version of Happy Birthday they play in clubs. How "Happy Birthday" became both of these things, I have no idea, but I never want to hear "Happy Birthday" again. 2. Overheard yesterday as I was walking home: a clothing store blasting "Jingle Bells" set to a disco-esque beat, including the phrases "Jingle all the way, oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleee." This One Time I Thought I Was Really Hot (But It Was Just The HVAC Talking)

Back in San Antonio, my friend Stacey had asked me to pick her up from the airport. It was full summer, and for those of you who haven't been in San Antonio in the summertime, you know that expression 'hot as an oven'? Well, I like to say San Antonio summers are 'hot as downwind from an exhaust pipe.' (Which means when you actually are downwind from an exhaust pipe, things get really unpleasant.) It's quite common for there to be a temperature difference of 35-40 degrees between indoor and outdoor air during a San Antonio summer. True story: I had a small heater at my work desk and turned it on in the summer, not winter, because the air conditioning was on so high in our building I froze to death at my desk. So anyway, I go straight from the gym to the airport to pick up Stacey. It's 10 pm but still around 100 degrees outside. Inside, it's a balmy 60 or so.
