Hall of Fame Part Two: Fishnet Stockings

Fishnets have a saucy and minxy reputation, and they do make the wearer feel a bit more sass in the pants just by slipping them on, but here is the dirty little secret about fishnets: really, really comfortable. Regular pantyhose are nylon (silk if you're lucky and/or living in 1927) but fishnets are cotton and lycra, the same material used to make baby doll t-shirts and you know how comfy those are. Plus, the webbing pattern massages your legs when you move, making them relaxing and therapeutic to boot. In the heat of summer, if your legs must be dressed up at all, this is the only bearable alternative. (I've paired them here with my favorite black sandals. I'm 5' 10" in these shoes. I heart them.)

A couple of things about fishnet stockings:

1. They come in more colors than just black. I recommend beige with Stila Sun Shimmer Dry Oil for a dressier but still nearly invisible summery look. I recommend chocolate brown for a cozy winter look. Red is for when you really feel like a tiger, or Halloween.

2. The smaller the diamond pattern, the less 'I am pairing this with a vinyl minidress and tossing back tequila all night' and the more 'Yes, take a second glance, I AM wearing fishnets with this classy skirt and shoes and you like it.' Pair to your planned event accordingly. I even wear them to church in the wintertime with tall boots.

3. More snag-prone than regular stockings, so watch out for rings and boot zippers/shoe clasps.

4. White makes your legs look like they are covered in spider webs. Hot pink is generally difficult to pull off. Probably skip this color. But if you see a color you like, buy two pair. They can be tough to find in colors other than black.

5. For extra comfort, get the thigh high and secure to your legs with silicon strips or elastics.

They offer no warmth, but why are you living in a cold place anyway, silly? Fishnets are generally never the wrong choice. And you'll smile to yourself while sliding them on.

Uhhm... Black classic-cell-size fishnets gives too provocative (even slutty, sorry) look to a woman, so i would not recommend to wear them! Other colors and cell-size are ok!

I cut my hair today, it now looks like Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. It took two hours, it was the most meticulous haircut I have ever received. He was amazing. I wish I could take him with me to Chongqing. Tomorrow I move into a hotel with the other volunteers in downtown Chengdu. We have a few days of meetings and then I move to Chongqing on Wednesday. It's about 4 hours away by train. Our new school helps us move, I am crossing my fingers they bring a car or some strong men to help! My suitcases are hella heavy. This One Time I Thought I Was Really Hot (But It Was Just The HVAC Talking)

Back in San Antonio, my friend Stacey had asked me to pick her up from the airport. It was full summer, and for those of you who haven't been in San Antonio in the summertime, you know that expression 'hot as an oven'? Well, I like to say San Antonio summers are 'hot as downwind from an exhaust pipe.' (Which means when you actually are downwind from an exhaust pipe, things get really unpleasant.) It's quite common for there to be a temperature difference of 35-40 degrees between indoor and outdoor air during a San Antonio summer. True story: I had a small heater at my work desk and turned it on in the summer, not winter, because the air conditioning was on so high in our building I froze to death at my desk. Really?!?? AKA, Cultural Mishaps in China, They Will Happen

After judging a speech competition all morning at a school that is not my own, I was asked to hand out the second place prizes. They also asked some other teachers, but I missed the details because they only gave them in Chinese and I didn’t understand everything. I was only supposed to hand out 4 of 12 prizes. But the prize girl kept handing me certificates, so I kept handing them out, while the audience laughed at me. I didn’t know what was going on, so I just kept going until someone stopped me. Later, I was interviewed for the school news, on video, and the girl interviewing me asked me this question: Random Girl: “When you made the mistake and everyone was laughing at you, what did you feel inside?” Really, random girl? Really? On camera you ask me this? Really? Two years ago, this would have devastated me. Now, I just have to laugh and say, “Oh well! Such is life in China.” Cultural mistakes will be made.
